Even more importantly, we have earned the trust of participating children and their parents. After suffering emotional or physical violence, survivors, more than anything, need the space to express their feelings. Artwork can say what children can’t about a mom who makes decisions that put them at risk, or a dad who uses anger to control family members. Compassionate, non-judgmental facilitators staff our Art Restores Kids (ARK) outreach program using the proven A Window Between Worlds curriculum. We also take these children to camp, where they learn to trust adults to care for them. For many, it is their first experience beyond the confines of busy city streets and a time of astonishing growth. Each child stretches to see the limitless horizon that opens before them. Though lasting just a short time each summer, camp is a revelation for our campers. They learn to rely on each other, camp counselors, and themselves, and we follow up throughout the year with camper reunions, and other special activities.
